  • Rustic nose, cherries and earthy tomato paste. Unexpectedly sour; acidity keeps the palate light but without food the sourness throws it out of whack. Earthy hints on the finish, but one dimensional for sure. Was gifted this bottle, but WS says $28, not enough value IMO. Overall evaluation: B (84).

  • Medium nose shows forest floor, must, mushroom, dried cherry, funk, raspberry, red plum. Palate nicely expressive, dried fruit, fresh earth tones, baking spices, red plum, medium body is a little lighter than expected in a nice way. Nice finish, could be more complex but the fruit layers are a nice Italian style.

  • Very consistent descriptors as my previous note, but somehow this bottle is drinking more balanced and complete. It's a lighter style, which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing, and the finish is a bit short, but there is complexity, nuance, and finesse to this wine that I'm enjoying quite a bit at this sitting. Aromatically more complex than on the palate, but this is a perfectly suitable pairing for your usual red sauced affair, and I'm enjoying it post meatball hero lunch today just the same. Cheers.

  • Medium ruby w/ transparency. Aromas of blue and dark red fruits (black cherry, plum), dirt, tobacco, sage, and a hint of eucalyptus. Medium body, acid, and finish, with flavors of black cherry, plum, blueberry, black tea, and orange peel. Has a lightness and somewhat lack of seriousness about it to me for a riserva, but perfectly suitable food wine for a variety of fare, from the pizza and red sauced classics to lighter fare like chicken or fish. Very mild tannins; would prob. drink over the next few years. Enjoyable enough, but slightly overpriced at $20 for me. 97% sangiovese, 3% merlot. Winery founded in 1349(!!).
