  • Flower Day - Purchased in 2007 and cellared carefully till now. I had drink by 2015 so was wondering if this one was over the hill. Decanted off some hard and light sediment. I brought it up from the cellar and decanted - would have been better to let it rest upright for a day or so. Lost about a tablespoon of wine due to light sediment. Should I have worried? I’d say no. Still opaque garnet at the core with only a light browning at the rim. Nose is earthy with tobacco, old leather, dried black fruit and dried roses. On the palate is where the age is showing - it’s light on the palate with still grippy tannins and medium plus acidity. Flavours are of dried red and black fruit, dried flowers, tobacco and leather. The fruit is just a bit watery which was not my recollection from when I purchased it. However, the finish is long with floral and dried fruit. This is like a developed Merlot based wine - a bit thin but still alive. It’s become delicate but with the more air it gets, the more the fruit is showing and tannins backing off. It’s definitely time to drink up as the tannins are outliving the fruit, but will be a good pairing for lamb chops, beef or lamb sausages or harder cheeses.

An hour later - now this is more like it! With some air it’s fattening up and the fruit is showing more. The tannins are still évident but now this would be gorgeous with Osso Buco or a beef stew. There’s a bit of funk showing but the rest of the flavours are as above except they’re deeper and richer. What a beautiful wine! Upping from 91 to 93 points.

  • This is an impressive wine. Explosive on the nose. Deep and dark and intense, this wine stays powerful from start to finish and accross the palate. Powerful fruit with notes of vanilla, espresso, dark chocolate, and most impressively, a strong anise flavor. The wine is fantastic and manages tomatoes really well. It would pair beautifully with hard cheeses and cured black olives. Long finish for this fantastic wine.

  • Charmingly rustic, but lacking life and fruit and really too dark, dense and tannic to get much enjoyment out of.

  • Very rustic, with aggressive woody tannins. Dense, but giving more wood than fruit. Not a style I particularly enjoy, but I'll take it over overripe.

  • Tannin/oak upon initial opening, with nice sweetish plum and tar. With time (2 hr or so), the oakines seemed to subside (or was neutralized by the food?) and this came together nicely. Highly recommended...and highly recommend cellaring for another 3yr or so.
