Wednesday Afternoon Wine Tasting (Kevin and Vicki's House): This was a very interesting Pinot. The nose showed typical cherry notes, but also seemed to exhibit some roasted meat, bark, earth, tea leaves and tobacco....the most interesting nose of all the pinots! Palate showed more tertiary flavors of blood and wood, followed by some muted cherry flavors. This showed less fruit than my palate would like. I am sure some would appreciate this style more than I....I enjoyed the wine, but preferred the 2012 Oregon pinots to this one. 92- to 92 for me.

Wine Wednesday (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium brick red color. PNP, drank a glass over 1.5hrs. Coming in after the three Oregon pinot, this hard right turn on the palate. Leaner, more structured and mineral driven as you'd expect, red cherry fruit, mushroom, dried red currants, iron and blood meal, dried wood spice and stone. 92+pts.

In a first for me, the cork pushed right into the bottle as I went in with the ah-so. Somewhat amazingly, I was able to fish it out with the ah-so prongs. Right off the bat this showed heavy notes of dried leaves and dry forest floor, to the point that I thought it was oxidized. However, with an hour or more of air an almost intoxicating nose of sous bois, garrigue and dark berries emerges. The palate unfortunately didn't undergo the same transformation, finishing a bit lean. Others at the dinner suggested it might need more time. It is also certainly possible this bottle was not representative, given the cork issue. I didn't write down a score, but for me this was in the 91 range. I have two more that I look forward to trying.

Burgundy theme (Asia Grand): Big and burly old-school wine that was difficult to guess. Barnyard, funk and earth on the nose from a bygone era, very good acidity backbone but not as fiercely tannic as I expected from a Corton. Good acidity and backbone to the wine, a bit sour on the finish.

Corton Rouge Burgs on a Summer Night (Martina, Mpls): Medium red color with a 7mm orange transition. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Damp forest floor and pungent mushroom, distinct iodine, red cherry and red currants, dried herbs on the nose. The palate is fairly full bodied but quite lithe, iodine, minerals, dark cherry and red cherry, red currants, lots of great dried herbs, very earthy and shroomy, cherry sweet tart essence. This was really good and it was even better the next night when we finished the last dregs off up at the lake where it added a pretty floral perfume. 92+ to 93 day one and 93 day two.
