  • Quite closed, needs some air no doubt. some brick hues showing in the glass. aromatics of violet, crushed petals, a touch of raspberry and licorice. on tasting there's restrained fruit with leather, tobacco and silky tannins, medium weight but a long structured delicious finish. a wine of subtle complexity. very nice. 92

  • Definitely don't pop and pour this. Give it time so that the aromatics have time to open. Haunting nose of violets, cinnamon and pez; medium-bodied, red fruited, fruit core still tight, yet the structure is not so confronting - fine-boned tannins on the midpalate, acid discreetly woven in, and a finish of tar and raspy tannins. Rather elegant; promising. A fine quality mid-term Barolo.

  • Floral bouquet. Firm tannin with fine line of acid. Approachable now

  • Starts subtly and then expands throughout the whole mouth. Dips slightly and then continues through to a wonderfully long finish. Lovely black cherry fruit with rose water, black tea and tarry liquorice. Firm tannin and plenty of acid but approachable for anybody who doesn’t mind a bit of tannin. Benefits from a good decant. Excellent.

  • I agree with Julianskeels about this wine - based on this bottle, I don't think this wine is built for the long haul.

Pronounced violet nose with a note of rose, herb and Mortein; medium bodied, smashed granite running through the midpalate, elegant with light polished tannins. Feels like there is good transparency in this wine.

This wine is built more along the lines of the 2012 Barolo that I have tried, lighter structure that will only require short to medium term cellaring to reach peak drinking - maybe 5-8 years...not that this is a bad thing.

Have had G Rinaldi Brunate 2013 a couple of days ago and so it was quite fresh in my mind. Structurally and dynamically the Rinaldi vs this Monchiero are in stark contrast, with the Rinaldi far more foreboding, with heroic structure and many layers crammed tightly together. Both are enjoyable though, just different. I wonder whether the "lightness" of this wine can be attributed to its maturation in 500L barrels.
