  • A somewhat lean and reticent entry on the initial sip begins to slowly, fairly begrudgingly, unfold and expand into an earthy red berry concoction befitting hallmark Volnay. Medium on the mid-palate and delicate on the finish, the magnitude of this wine has to be measured in millimeters (not yards, as was the talk of the CA Pinot next to it); if one isn't paying attention to the nuances here, they will certainly be missed (especially if among other wine palate-grabbers and heavier fare - which both were indeed the case in this instance). Alone by the fire in Zermatt with perhaps a thin slice of mild charcuterie is about where this wine belongs. Next to a 2014 Marcassin Pinot Noir, it's not even worth having the conversation, which is ironically kinda why the conversation had to happen about polarizing terroir, classic vs. modern, ripe vs. restrained, fruity vs. earthy, et al.

Traditionalists will definitely find pleasure here, as this wine is pulling scripts and lines right out of a familiar Volnay screenplay. A wine one may want to wait on a few years to better find tertiary flavors that stand to add more depth and complexity. 92-94 points depending on how your Pinot classicism sways.

  • My greatest day of wine (over)consumption. Ever. (Aaron and Tiffany's pad): First of Brian's 2 pinots. Notes on the nose of palate of red cherries and currants, earthy minerality, tree bark, some forest floor and mushroominess backed by a tannic note. Light garnet, medium bodied, light to medium legs. Medium+ tannins and really racy acidity. Great intensity and persistence, moderate complexity. Ok, so it's been too long since I've had a real (read: French) PN, and the last, a Corton-Grancey, felt like the winemaker had just finished an apprenticeship in Healdsburg, but this reminds me why we just may not have the climate, terroir or wherewithal to work with this grape in my part of the PTZ. Taut, saline and savory (may I digress a moment? every time I read a TN or pro review saying a Bordeaux or Burgundy is big and I think it circumspect, I want to ask the reviewer what s/he is smoking and asking them what their idea of a not big wine would be, as, in general, even the biggest wines this side of CdPs coming France seem lean compared to even our most reserved local products), this worked very well with Dave's Bouef Bourgongne, the lighter body of the wine more than offset as a balancing mechanism by its lively acidity and surprisingly robust tannins. Not closed by any means, but I can certainly see this becoming more generous, as the aforementioned Jagger--I know, I'm showing my increasing age--sang, time is on [its] side. Best Pinot I've had since a '01 mag of a Latricieres-Chambertin about 5 years ago. Should be administered as serum to those afflicted by too much candied fruit and baking spice from Messrs. Kosta and Brown, Martinelli, et al. Stylistically preferred vs. the '14 Marcassin Marcassin it was poured against. Not cheap at the WS price, but by no means unreasonable value vs. the inflated Burgundy universe.

  • My first full bottle of this Volnay Premier Cru, bottle number 501 out of 1872, still holding some more in my cellar, searching for a red to pair a famous german dish, roll of beef with potatoes and coocked green beans,
what a fragrance, meaty, earthy, forest floor, black and red ripe fruit, still very tight, the fruit delicate, tasty, and ripe, elegance with a lot of juicy weight, will improve with a lot of more time, with a decent decant can be enjoyed from now on, 2015 in Burgundy mostly has that lush fruit and body, lingering finish, will benefit from another 5- 10 years in your cellar, **(**- +?), 91,92,(+) potential
Being in a thoughtful mood 24 hours later, really no fruit left in the last third of this bottle, very meaty and earthy on the palate, tar even, this taste is not really for me now.

  • La Paulée de San Francisco - Grand Tasting (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Tasting, brief note. Pure red fruit with lots of power just 1/2 step in front of lots of elegant structure. Ripe throughout, but enough structure to hold everything together. Totally destemmed. Needs the most time of today's Rossignol lineup, but easily my favorite.

  • La Paulée de SF Grand Tasting (Fairmont Hotel, SF CA): Tighter nose with some red cherry. Structure that you notice right away. More firm than fleshy fruit. 90+
