Quite excellent off pop and pour. very strong ruby color, translucent, without a hint of orange or amber. Very strong. The nose delivers pure spicy cherry fruit. Not a ton of complexity here, but no complaints either. in the mouth, it reveals quite a bit more: dense, earthy, dark, cherry fruit that evolves in the mouth into a very nice satisfying finish. At 12 years of age, this is drinking really beautifully, showing no signs of age. Will it develop further? Who knows, but given the sheer pleasure this wine delivers right now, I wouldn’t wait. 5-12-17-9: 93/100.

PnP. Beautiful nose but a bit lean on the palate. Also showing the acidity of the vintage, mouth watering. Better on the nose than on the palate, at least initially. This didn’t improve later on, slightly sour on the finish too. The same bottle improved tremendously by the 3rd day, almost in perfect balance with decent complexity, Volnay with Chambolle like perfume, woah, what a transformation! 90 points (and that’s been kind) on Day 1 and 93 points on Day 3, this was still evolving and improving. The more I drink the less I know about wines.

Volnay theme: More like the Rossignols that I have tried before, vibrant and ripe dark red fruit that showed good freshness. The acidity stuck out a little though and made me guess 2013. Enjoyable in a fruit-forward kind of way.

Tried at La Paulee Sommelier Scholarship Fund Tasting at Popina in Brooklyn. It was uncomfortably hot and this was an outdoor tasting, and the wines were delivered warm and then cooled in ice trays during tasting. Generally speaking, I personally preferred the younger wines of this tasting (2016-2019). 6

Sommelier Scholarship Fund Tasting (Popina - Brooklyn NY): Walk around tasting. Slightly reduced tonight, but otherwise fun, bright and classically Volnay with red cherry and savory spice. No further upside.
