Blackberries, licorice, coffee, spice, and earthiness in the nose. Black cherries and chocolate in the flavor. Well balanced and a long smooth finish. (out of magnum)

California Syrah (Webster Wine Bar): Dark ruby at the core and translucent at the edge. Lovely, layered nose of fresh black fruit, dried herbs, cocoa powder and spice. This is so lively and fresh on the palate. Abundant bright, juicy black cherry fruit. Not as complex or Rhone-like as an '02 Pax Griffins Layer in the same tasting. But the purity and freshness of fruit is quite appealing.

The Rotating Dinners, I.1: California Syrah (Chicago, IL): With the 2007, this was a pair of wines that really tasted like they had some similarities with each other. This is a very clean bottle of syrah, with none of that meat, game, or olive character, though there is a nice smokiness to the nose. The palate shows quite a bit of earth, and the fruit is in a good place without becoming too sweet. All the elements are very good, but this just lacks a bit of concentration and depth.

Drinking beautifully and still has some gritty edges. Gritty, fruity and a major league effort.
