Final bottle from a half case, and one of the best. Fresh and lively, tannic profile, typical for 2005. Slightly dusty and earthy style, cassis fruit and some floral lift, well-balanced and energetic, but not really screaming Northern Rhône. Built for solidity rather than typicity, more about structure than about expression. Slightly old-fashioned, sturdy stuff. A food wine. Now-2020.

The bottle variation in this wine is considerable. Today, this is good news for a change. The four bottles tasted so far, ranged from completely maderised to (slightly) tired but intact. This bottle however (all five from the same half case) is much livelier and fresher, with sufficient stuffing to outlast the softening tannins, black fruit and some spice, present and correct rather than very expressive or detailed. In fact, it is still described very well by Herberto's tasting note from 2 March 2010: "This is solid. Not huge fruit or life, but tastes like a St. Joseph, not a modern generic concoction."

VinoLaprisco Tasting (Restaurant De Karpendonkse Hoeve *, Eindhoven, Netherlands): Paired with the Saint-Joseph La Sensonne 2005 from Domaine Coursodon. Unlike the bottle tasted yesterday, this is in good nick. No detailed notes. The colour is quite youthful for age; the nose seems a bit tired, but the palate is quite youthful still. Solid wine, completely ready, no need to wait.

PNP. Cork perfect. Color garnet. Nose w meaty Syrah and some slightly medicinal garrigue. Swishing shows significant somewhat harsh tannin which is grainy and a little stemmy on finish. Sipping shows its polish, with fruit and licorice but the underlying structure I think will benefit from time. This seems like one that the fruit will survive as the structure resolves.

Pristine bottle. Maderised unfortunately. It really smells like a decent three year old Meio Doce.
