  • A fairly dark colour; dark, smoky, blackberry fruit, medium weight and good balance. Attractive now, but will keep. Madame La Grappe liked this.

  • Good, although quite rustic right now. Vague warm dark berry preserves (not jammy, just ripe), buttressed by quite a bit of chalky tannin and some almost-integrated funk, sometimes the fun barnyard kind, sometimes a bit more clashing. Would really thrive with greasy food or more bottle age; I can sense the stuffing and quality here, it's just a bit unruly right now, even at 7 years.

  • Day 1 - Ripe medium++ intensity nose consisting of cranberry, iron, new leather, tropical red flowers, and a touch of vanilla/cacao/cinnamon. Mouth is thick and round, both velvety tannin and medium++ acidity are totally wrapped in viscosity to remove edge. 14.5% abv is well balanced, just contributing to warmth. Typical Bandol character with additional cleanness and natural softness. Went nicely with roasted chicken with indonesian coconut curry sauce. 90-91.

Day 3 was closed, day 5 was the best, intense hibiscus note and deep dates fruit. 90-91.

  • I loves me some mourvedre and hence a lot of Bandol Rouge. Unfortunately I didn't check ahead and something seemed wrong here. I gasped in silent horror during my first sip or two-could grenache be in the blend? I am highly sensitive to grenache, it really hits my palate in a bad way: hot, spicy, jammy, fat. I immediately looked it up on the importer's site and found it is in fact 10% old vine grenache. "Hey, honey, do you need any red wine for cooking?"

By the way, there's nothing wrong with this wine for normal people, and it seemed otherwise, bold, hearty and full-fruited. Just impossible for me to enjoy, and I'm only leaving a note to remind myself to avoid it in the future. I don't want her you can have her she's too grenache for me, even at a paltry 10%.
