  • Burgundy Al summed it up pretty nicely. This was a very tough wine to figure and didn't show much Burg or even Chard character as the fruit was so muted and subdued. Hopefully just an off bottle or awkward phase.

  • BYO Blind Tasting and Dinner (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): Magnum. I don't recall ever having this wine before but don't know what to make of it. Very dark color had me initially concerned re oxidation, but that was not a problem. Everything was just simple and almost nondescript. Served to the group blind, it wasn't even clearly Chardonnay! Nice and pleasant, but that is not even close to expectations.

  • Upon opening the bottle, the capsule is slightly corroded and the cork broke in half. Nevertheless, despite the troublesome extraction, the wine is thankfully not premoxed. Instead, it pours a deep, full golden color, like that of apple juice, along with very long legs. From the appearance, this wine is starting to show its age, which is surprising as it is only made less than two years ago. The nose surely tells signs of age as the notes are more tertiary than primary. There are Chinese herbal tea, Belgian beer, preserved plums, oak, stone fruits, flint, honey, spice and a lot of nuttiness. The wine smells full and expansive, much like that of a winter warmer. The palate reflects the nose and this chardonnay drinks with a voluptuous body and balanced minerality and acidity. Textured with layered creaminess, this Burgundy yields notes of honey-roasted nuts, burnished leather, spice and lemon zest. The finish is long and there is distinct toastiness in the end, along with an acidic cut, to keep the wine from being overly cloying. This is a superb effort that has aged beautifully over the years. However, it is nearing the end of the drinking window and I do not see much longer life ahead of it. Drink up.

  • Nose with pretty strong sulphur, which stayed on for over 2 hours, palate with quite stony and flinty with a pretty acidic and lean finish.

  • Very well kept bottle at Adour Alain Ducasse. Was outstanding after a little awkwardness right out of the bottle. Near perfect balance of minerality, fruit and tannins. Veered more into the exotic spice, pear and (maybe) sage profile, which keeping enough creaminess/umami to keep everything together. Would drink again in a heartbeat, but probably has no more than another year before it really starts declining - felt like it was at the tail end of its peak.
