What a cool wine: old vine Carignan (81%) and Zin (19%), makes you wonder what else might be in the mix. Hot and dry vintage in a pretty hot and dry place, yet it is just 13.2% abv! Cherry jam, apricots, plums, blueberries, figs, white chocolate, a touch of toastiness, blood, dried rose petals, diverse airy herbal notions... it's kinda blowsy on the nose, bit of a potpourri thing going on. This wine has a trick though, maybe comparable to fine Chablis, in the way that it smells rich before hitting the palate with an austere and dominating slap of acid. Tannins are soft and round, and there is fleeting plush quality before those wacky acids step in. Strident tart fruit flavors are legion but it is neither terse nor harsh, maybe a bit jittery and magnanimous. Coarse up front, it really comes into focus on the finish... reds, magentas, purples... blood, stones, leaves... great balance of rich texture and refreshing cut... it is one of the most jarring and distinctive CA wines I've ever tasted. Yummy too.

PNP. Cork perfect. color dark garnet with ruby edges. nose has some VA but mostly dark blueberry fruit. swishing shows acids and tannins, both of which are a little tingly tasted alone. sipping shows full bore fruit integrated with the structure. this is easily mistakeable as a barbera or dolcetto. very easy to drink and delicious with lamb tonight.

Dense, Rhone-like blend. Drinking okay now with food, but will probably be better in a year or 3.
