8,5% alcohol. Tasted blind among 49 other 2016 Riesling Kabinetts in Kabinett Cup 2016.
Very pale and quite neutral color. A rather distinctive and atypical nose with somewhat herbal aromas of hoppy Pils, a little bit of peachy stone fruit, a hint of ripe citrus fruits and a touch of curry. The wine is quite full-bodied and obviously medium-sweet on the palate with balanced acidity that keeps the wine pretty delicate and lightweight. There are focused and juicy flavors of honey, some peach, a little bit of star fruit, a hint of steely minerality and a touch of apple purée. No signs of those herbal tones the nose showed. The finish is firm, bright and mineral with medium-sweet flavors of ripe red apples, steely minerality, a little bit of very ripe and sweet pear, a hint of papaya and a touch of spice.
A very balanced, nice and vibrant Riesling Kabinett with good focus and a terrific balanced between the sweetness and the steely minerality. Still very youthful, but very drinkable already. However, I can see a wine like this benefiting from extra age of at least 5 years. Drink or keep. Great value at 11,50€. Despite all its lovely qualities, the wine didn't end up in anyone's top 5 and thus it didn't manage to score any points from 12 judges.
