  • 2012 harvest, disgorged 2017 (1/23). 5g/l Dosage.

Quite a bit of oaky vanilla. Creamy with a tinge of herbal notes. Some tropical fruit and caramel.

This was a bit blunt for my tastes, and the profile wasn't what I was looking for. On night 2 this became much more interesting and well-integrated, so I'd recommend sitting on bottles if you have them.

  • No note taken. Quite enjoyable, but hitting a price that is a little expensive for what you get.

  • A biodynamically farmed 2012 Chardonnay from Côte de Sézanne. Aged for 10-12 months in oak barrels. Disgorged on November 15th, 2016. Dosage 5 g/l. Bottle #467 of total 1750 bottles.

Pale straw yellow color. Fruity, harmonious and subtly sweet-toned nose with layered aromas of white peach, creaminess, some honeycomb, a little bit of bruised apple, light vanilla tones and - as the wine opens up in the glass - an understated hint of caramel oak. The wine is weighty, vinous and quite powerful on the palate with brooding flavors of ripe golden apples, some toasted bread, a little bit of bruised apple, light mineral notes of steel and wet stones, a hint of créme à la vanille and a touch of browned butter. Despite its broad frame, the wine feels very balanced with its high acidity and rich, creamy and silky smooth mousse that shows good persistence. The finish is long, toasty and mineral with bright flavors of fresh red apples, some vanilla custard, a little bit of tangy salinity, light autolytic notes of toast and brioche, a hint of ripe citrus fruits and a touch of savory oak spice.

A big, very impressive and quite Burgundian Champagne that feels very unlike those lithe, mineral and even occasionally austere Blanc de Blancs wines I've had from Côte de Sézanne previously. Very complex, powerful and captivating, yet retaining that precision and mineral core that seems to define Sézanne wines. Really lovely right now, but seems to have the stuffing to be cellared for much longer. Great value at 55€. Highly recommended.
