  • This was a pleasant surprise. Black wine with lots of meaty, coffee and dark fruits. Nice mouth with good grip and nice acid. Maybe a touch of oak, but not too distracting. This developed a bit with some time in the decanter and was pretty complex. Good CA syrah and not too ripe/oak driven.

  • SFwine double-blind tasting at Dave's (San Francisco): Opaque and very dark, nearly black. Nose of ripe, jammy/estery dark fruit and some coffee grounds. Lots of juicy, ripe fruit on the palate but with surprisingly good balance and acidity. Young. A well made wine, if not my preferred style. I guessed '04 Sonoma Coast syrah. (Tasted blind)

  • Almost black in color with just a little violet around the rim. A nose of buttery caramel corn, blackberry and blueberry, charcoal and apricots. Floral almost petrol-like aromas. Very large scale on the palate with smoky, creamy blueberry. Finishes very tannic, which show a little coarse and a touch green. Needs at least 3 years to soften. I think that this will improve significantly and show some cooler climate characteristics over time.

(Lazy Creek Vineyards Syrah Roemer Vineyard) Deep, opaque purple core with dark pink rim. Intense, developing nose of baked blackberry, allspice, roasted meat, campfire smoke, and espresso. Dry, with relatively high acidity, tannins, and alcohol. Satiny, creamy texture; the palate confirms the nose, but the extremely long finish adds mocha, apple skins, and well-integrated oak notes of clove and vanilla. A huge wine of great complexity, probably requiring intensely flavored red-meat dishes to achieve its potential. Structurally capable of 10 or more years of aging.
