  • Renegade Wine Dinner - Thierry Allemand (Marc Forgione - Tribeca, NYC): Served in a flight of (96, 95,94), this was my second favorite. A nicely mature Cornas and very fun to try. Near the end of a long vertical so notes are sparse, but definitely less rustic than the '96 and quite enjoyable.

  • This bottle was rather different from last March's but almost equally good. There was very pristine youthfulness with reductive notes for about 30 minutes after opening the bottle and, at first, the wine seemed more robust, fuller bodied, more savoury, earthy and tannic but with similar bright sour cherry and violet notes, in sum more typically rugged. As the bottle progressed it became suaver and sweeter fruited, more like the previous bottle. I guess that this wine in sound bottles can go on and even improve, where there is reduction, for many years. Very good.

  • This is a lovely Cornas. Not a "wow" wine and medium bodied at most but full of delicious aromas on both on the nose and palate of bright cherry and violets with classical linear shape, silky texture and some depth of fruit allied to minerals, still quite lively acidity and decent tannic grip on quite long finish. Modest alcohol (12.5%) helps IMO. Some may object that this wine had refined away typical Cornas ruggedness but I love it. Excellent.

  • A fascinating wine -- no other way to put it. Decanted, and then started on it nearly two hours later. Initially very tight and severe, even with the two hours of decanting. The nose showed animal and leather, and the palate was unyielding, with dry tannins. Over the course of the next couple of hours it was like a wild ride at an amusement park. The nose exhibited a panoply of licorice, very dark fruit, smoke, and spice. Every time I went back for another sniff it was even more intoxicating. The palate, while still exhibiting some tannins (though in a much more approachable way), was lively and loaded with blackberries and begging for more time. Wow! If I had more of this I wouldn't touch another bottle for at least five years.

  • Seemingly ageless syrah.
Exceptionally pure, focussed fruit - still barely a hint of secondary development.
Balanced and memorable - this has at least a decade ahead of it.
