  • 12,5% alcohol.

Dense and fully opaque blackish-red color with a somewhat mature brick-orange hue. The nose feels somewhat aged and slightly tertiary with attractive aromas of leather, some meaty tones, a little bit of smoke, light soy sauce tones, a hint of wizened dark forest fruits and a touch of dusty earth. The wine is dry, dense and full-bodied on the palate with quite chewy mouthfeel and intense, developed flavors of meaty umami, wizened blackcurrants, charred game, some smoky tones, a little bit of beef jerky, light floral notes of wilted flowers and a hint of savory wood spice. The wine is still remarkably structured with its moderately high acidity and still very firm and grippy tannins. The finish is dry, tannic and slightly bitter with remarkably long flavors of gamey meat, leather, wizened blackcurrants, some plummy tones, a little bit of earthy spices and a hint of savory wood.

A classic, impressive and still so very muscular Madiran. I have no idea how much new oak Brumont has used with this wine, but there is no obvious oak characteristics whatsoever here, just very classic Tannat fruit. The overall feel is that of an aged Bordeaux, but with more power and muscle. The wine shows beautiful, developed complexity now at the age of 20 years; while the wine might keep for many years more, I doubt there is much more development going to happen here. It is sitting firmly on its plateau of maturity. Great stuff.

  • The very last one at age 17. Nice "old wine" nose, well balanced and relatively smooth - with a little dry edge that is. Will go down well with food.

  • A bit of menthol, eucalyptus on the reticent, shy nose, next to a little black fruit. Fresh attack, followed directly by a big bunch of fine-grained tannins. Just a little fruit left in the medium-bodied taste. Finishes rather dry. I think the tannins are going to outlive the fruit in this wine, not sure if further ageing will improve anything.

  • Fondu, a point mais des notes pas très agréables (a mon gout) de poivron...?!?
