Knowing that the 2016 is not that classic vintage ..... we sampled this wine mostly against the 2018's. While this wine shows ripe fruits, it also does so with muted expression. Kind of like a weak vanilla ice cream.

Opened to breathe for Sun lunch and dinner, slow ox for 3h. Somewhat muted nose, some heat, vanilla, some backing spices. On the palate, well rounded red fruit, oak, soft tannins, and some spiciness in the long acid finish. 4h after opening, beautiful red cherries emerged and the wine blossomed and became well integrated. In the first 3 hours, one notch below the '10 BdM Val di Suga (91/92) which I tried last night but still very solid showing especially with grilled steak. Four hours after opening, 92/93. It really needed the extra time to show its best.

Tasted at Benvenuto Brunello NYC. Only 1,500 bottles produced. This producer is semi-modern as far as I can tell. while using large Slavonian Casks, I think the last 12 months for the Riserva's are spent in French barriques, at least that is what I told by the winery representative. This seemed much more approachable than the 2013 Riserva it was still very oak influenced showing spicy notes and a good bit of ripe cherry. Full bodied, fairly tannic and a little lower in acidity than ideal. Nonetheless I did find this the most enjoyable of theirs to drink today.
