crunchy red currants and blackberries and red plums.. gravel and tar.. mountain sage, mint and smoldering iron.. bright and deep and wild..
the body of the wine is lithe but powerful.. there is an acidity that lends a brightness to all of the flavors.. the tannins are grippy and structuring
v impressive
deep ruby.. 13.5% abv.. from own-rooted vines planted in 1969 in Sonoma Valley at 1700' on the ridgeline that divides Napa Valley from the Valley of the Moon.. planted in rocky, austere soils of clay-loam, and volcanics.. dry-farmed..

Expectations were low given AG's 89 point rating and overall bearish note. The nose was very Pauillac-like--albeit one from a ripe year. The palate gave a similar impression, but there was an underlying (over)ripeness of fruit that I think would nudge most tasters to guess New World. The bright acid makes you debate it, though. Maybe it's the passage of time or maybe some bottle variability, but I am a bit higher on this wine than AG was. I think it is in the prime window for drinking. Just be prepared for something richer than you'd expect from the A-R label.
I've had some bad luck with my cellared A-R wines (pinot and syrah) of late, so I was uncertain of what to expect here. I'm pleased to report that this wine was without any flaws whatsoever and was super delicious in a classic (pre-1990s) California Cab profile. Perfect pairing with grilled lamb on a warm summer night.

Earth and herbs. Prominent tannins and acid. A CA wine that is built for more time in cellar. Nice flavors of pine, mint, cloves; cranberries and blueberries; a finish of red fruit and a touch of oak.

restrained and balanced fruit and spice. Not overly sweet. Nice finish of fruit, cloves and oak.
