  • First Amarone ever tasted.
After opening on first night: dark garnet colored, but not opaque. High-toned nose of ripe, ripe red fruit and impression of a lot of sugars. On the palate the fruit was so prevalent that the wine seemed a bit sweet, though I'm sure it's dry. Wine lacks a bit in the midpalate, but great attack and finish. The alcohol was faintly noticeable but not strong. Better drunk with food than alone and was good with grilled vegetables in a panini (sweetness of vegetables worked). Finish is medium-long with that high-toned fruit again and secondary flavors of tobacco with a hint of bitterness.
Second night (sample warmed after brought out of refrigeration): drunk on its own without food. A little less fruit on the attack tonight and more prevalent bitterness but still the sweet high-toned fruit, and secondary tobacco and bitterness in the finish. The tannins were pretty supple both nights but the bitterness of the wine was more pronounced.
I was pretty impressed, especially at this price. And 2002 was considered a really BAD vintage in Veneto?

  • This wine was dark, dark, dark, had bell pepper and cherry tones. Is hard to drink without food it is so wonderfully thick and heavy. Had good tones of fruits and no acid or bitterness. Very good wine.

  • Amarone Night with Friends (Doug's House): the nose was like a barrel sample - lush sweet fresh fruit, just gobs of it. chocolate as well. with time it developed more toward cherry/tobacco. on the palatte notes of cedar, sweet fruit, ripe rich wine but manages its weight, just hint of alc. this really seems too young - perhaps needs a few years to come together.

  • Saturday Chez Nous: Deep ruby color. Big, floral nose, very perfumy, with a heavy dose of primary grapey fruit aromas. The fruit is a little awkward at this stage, and this pretty clearly needs a few more years of cellaring. Also some background dust and smoke. After a couple of hours of air, peppery notes as well -- this was a wine where the last sip was the best. On the palate it's full bodied and silky with a touch of cedar and a touch of sweetness to balance the bitter edge.
