  • A bit heavier and seemingly more advanced than I’d like on day 1 but day 2 this came around nicely even serving a bit warmer this had a nice cooling acid and gentle mineral edge, pineapple, honey crisp apple, white peach and a more generous yellow quality to it, a sneaky tension keep the flavors buoyant and fresh, still popping but maybe not quite the elegance and power of the 2019.

  • One of those "hard to not gulp down" Kabinetts from the Mosel. It's got everything you want from lime, lemon, green apples and carnations to this unexplicable Mosel herbal touch that just drags you into the glass. It will be hard for me to wait for development. Sorry it wasn't Forceberry's cup of tea at that stage, but I found this gorgeous. Zalto universal was perfect. On its own or with some spicy Asian starter. Drink or hold, if you can manage.

  • 8% alcohol. Tasted blind among 46 other 2017 Riesling Kabinetts in Kabinett Cup 2017.

Youthful lime-green color. Somewhat skunky nose with aromas of hard-boiled eggs, some lemon-scented hand soap, a little bit of stony minerality, light chalk dust tones and a savory hint of fresh, mealy apple. The wine is moderately full-bodied, round and somewhat flabby on the palate with rich, medium-dry flavors of wizened golden apples, some ripe citrus fruits, a little bit of tangy salinity and a hint of wet stones. The acidity feels only medium-to-moderately high, not really lending the wine enough necessary acidity. The finish is dry-ish, crisp and more acid-driven with quite intense flavors of lemony citrus fruits, some tart green apples and a little bit of quince.

A rather simple and uninspiring Kabinett lacking the precision and depth one looks for in a Mosel Riesling - however, it might be that skunky Böckser reduction and sponti character that make the wine feel so dull and lifeless. Perhaps the wine is just closed for now and will be up for business after a few years? Only time will tell. Many judges found the wine much more interesting than I did, however, and the wine managed to score a total of 27 points from the 12 judges, making it finish in 11th place out of 46 wines.
