Opened in HK. Slow oxed for 1.5 hours before serving blind.
My bottle in the dinner. Performed exactly to expectation: Soldera nose, explosively aromatic right out of the gate but getting better and more complex with air. Silky smooth, perfectly integrated tannins, masking some serious structure. One of my favourite wines for a reason, and a pleasure to share with everyone!

Drank in a restaurant for father in law 65th birthday. Put into decanter for 1.5 hours. Opening very well. Very expressive nose, but the wine's energy dissipated quickly in the glass. Suggest either bottle decant for a longer time period e.g. 2.5 hours, or very small pours. Much better than the last episode with the same vintage (one month ago), suspect a strong component of bottle variation.

Opened at the Regent in HK. P&P and enjoyed slowly over dinner.
Thankfully, this was much better than the bottle I had last week. Signature sweet, seductive Soldera nose upon opening as always, but the palate was much better today in terms of integration, complexity and finish. Showed some enjoyable evolution throughout, and perhaps the first time I've noticed hints of sweetly smoked firewood coming through in a Soldera on the nose about 2.5 hours in.
Clearly a great vintage, if ever so slightly behind the 2016. I believe there's some upside here if you're willing to be patient, but these are effortlessly drinkable. A wonderful wine and always makes me so happy. Already looking forward to the next one!

DRC, Bizot, Pignan, Soldera and Grange (L'envol, St Regis, HK): Bottle decanted for a few hours. This time it was linear and boring, and did not show potential. But the wine performed much better when I tried another bottle some time later. Possible bottle variation, not likely related to different decanting time.

Opened at L'Envol in HK. Slow-oxed for 1.5 hours before being served, and enjoyed as the third red in a great flight for dinner.
Incredible aromatics upon first pour, sweet seductive cherries and red fruit coming through. Floral and very pleasurable, and a very nice transition away from the two Pinots before.
Unfortunately, I don't think this bottle performed to our lofty expectations. Though the nose was excellent, the palate was a little clunky and unbalanced, and somewhat unidimensional, which is the opposite of what you look for in Soldera. It was still light and going down well, meriting the score given, but I know it can do better.
Perhaps this still needs some time to integrate (and reflects some of the notes below that the 2016 is drinking better now) - perhaps this was a slightly off bottle. Given my love for this wine, I will definitely seek to revisit, but will try to resist the temptation of opening my own bottles for 2-3+ years at least to give it a bit more time. If everything comes together then this has the potential to be an incredible Soldera.
First Soldera for many around the table - as always, a pleasure to share with the gang for our celebration dinner.
