Clear light ruby with garnet edges. Shy aromas of cherry, tar, and roses. Penetrating cherry fruit on the palate against a harmonious backdrop of strong tannins and bracing acids, and a long winding finish. Quite closed right now, but full of promise, which makes it hard to rate, 92 with a promise of much more.

Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): From our wedding year and also Giulia’s first year of making wine so it was a double celebration. This was just awesome. Out of a magnum. It was decanted almost from the beginning and so had some time while we were focused on the champagne and a bit on the burgundy. Really got pours as we sat down to the lasagna course. I mentioned in my burgundy note that it was missing the ‘je ne sais quoi’ which to me is often the just total elegance, linearity, brightness. This wine had that. It was magical.

Drank after 5+ hours in a carafe (based on another reviewer’s feedback). Sipped after 1 and 3 hours, and it is definitely better at 5. The color is a medium ruby red. The nose has leather, mushroom, Bing cherries, and faint floral notes. The palate has tart cherries and hints of something savory, but not much else. The wine needs a few more years in the cellar to integrate. Now it has a medium body with medium+ tannins, medium+ acid, which together overwhelm the fruit. While the nose is interesting, the palate suffers a lack of much to recommend it. Alcohol 14%.

Fine integrated nose of licorice, cherries, coffee. Satisfying progression of deeply penetrating fruit on the palate with strong but smooth tannins in a sweet acid frame moving into intense aromatic back notes. Excellent with rosemary chicken, roasted sunchokes, and spinach fried in olive oil, sultanas, and pinenuts.
