Blind. I guessed this was Pinot Noir and French from Burgundy but that was it. Nice sandalwood and oak with cranberry and pomegranate flavors. Seems like it came from a cool vintage and I thought it was at least 10 years old. There was a slight bitter note at the finish.

A beautiful Burgundy, full bodied with loads of cherries, some iron, and a bit of spice and acidity in the finish. This has many more years of life ahead. On day two, the fruit was purer still, with a delicious beam of fruit.

Maybe some bottle variation but this was a bit of a puzzler after a 2 hr decant. Initial smell was a head rush of cherry. When settled in the glass there was a robust if rustic combination of cherry and strawberry, barnyard funk, light spice. The palate was a lot clunkier than the bouquet, with still fairly coarse tannins and sharp acidity. I don’t think this is a matter of “too young” - it wasn’t bad, but it was far from sublime. Score: 90. Relative to expectations: -

I echo the comments below. Phenomenal in a word. The wine is a beautiful deep garnet, medium bodied +, gorgeous right from opening and improves naturally with aeration. Bouquet of dark red fruits, mellow tannins, spice and bramble. By bramble, I mean an earthiness I can't quite describe.... Bought 6 bottles and would snap up all I can find.

Nine years later. Everything is right about this grizzly bear of a wine. The tannins are dusty, but the fruit is radiant, the minerally power and drive are exemplary and the balance and texture are impeccable. Excellent length. Still youthful, but a brief decant releases it from its aromatic shell. Early maturity, great future, until 2045-2055 with ease.
