Garnet with a red tint. Sweet cassis and berry compote nose, perhaps a touch of tomato; very fruity and inviting. Initially there's something wrong with the flavour though, dominating the midpalate is a strong earthy, almost acrid taste. There's juicy fruit beyond, and mild drying tannins. I don't know if this is an off bottle or what. Not undrinkable, but not pleasant to begin with. Gets better with air, as is often the case. Unrated as unsure if it was faulty. [Screwcap; 13.5% abv; Scotmid/Co-op, £7].
