  • Chosen as likely to have enough fruit to stand up to a cheeseboard, and it did. Deep and plummy but without any of the obtrusive oak or blocky fruit that the 2017 and 2018 sadly showed when I tried them... this was svelte, delicious and compelling. Disappeared in no time. Ready in the way you'd hope, but still very fresh and early in its window - I'll enjoy tucking into the other five bottles over the next 10-15 years.

  • Decanted 3.5 hours
A stunning and extremely complex wine
In a modernist style. If this style appeals to you, then add a point to my score
Savoury aromas of balsamic, tar, sour cherry, some funk. New oak, but nothing too obtrusive
    Medium+ fine-grained tannins
This wine can age many decades

  • Testing the first of these from a case to get a sense of it when it’s young and whether it’s an earlier drinker (for a Barolo)

Nose: initially quite reticent but interesting things start to emerge: orange peel, light tar, a high toned note of roses and violet - a little shy to start with but interesting components

Palate: very crisp and fresh as you’d expect this young. Reasonably light but intriguing flavours of sweet raspberry, sour cherry, cola, orange zest and green olive. High acidity and the expected teeth coating tannins

All in all there is a lot there and very enjoyable now as a bright and crisp Barolo but suspect this will mature into something pretty interesting.

  • Interesting to taste the first vintage of this, very much a classic Barolo - that means Voerzio in his new, unoaked style. Dry, firm, yet juicy, extremely healthy and open, managed to guess the vintage allthough not the producer or the cuvee, certainly. Extremely drinkable.
