  • One of a few remaining '17s sitting in my cellar.....

Pnp'd last night to a juicy, big dark red/black fruited wine....hard to tell it was a Syrah. Very Cab like. Very ripe, and sweet fruit with balanced acidity. Maybe a 91?

Cork back into the bottle and on the counter until tonight. Pulling the cork, you get a quick burst of ashtray/cigarettes on the nose. Surprise, not! But, it is literally gone in 5-10 seconds.

The wine on the other hand is better on the palate, than the 1st night. It's deeper and smoother and literally has all the trademark things you look for in a Syrah. It is meaty, gamey, smokey, full of black olive, etc. It's very good considering it has a bit of smoke taint to it, but as I said that was on the nose and gone quickly the 2nd night. This is actually one of the better '17s out there that I've had, but again, the natural smokiness of a Syrah does a lot to hide the smoke taint of the '17 vintage. Although, the taint of smoke is not to be mistaken for barrel char. Smoke taint is def cigs and ashtrays. This is one wine that, due to it's natural ability to camouflage a bit of the taint, can probably get away with it......

  • Gave this one a little more time and it delivered. All the previous goodness with some chocolate and grilled steak for good measure.

  • Plush, savory tannins and over-the-top black pepper. Tremendously supple mouthfeel. PnP, so I wasn’t able to give it time.
