  • Perfumed red fruit aroma, notes of cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, dried flowers and “pinot funk”. Very complex and enticing aroma.

Rich red fruit flavor with loads of sweet strawberry, ripe cherry, herbs and vanilla. Cocoa notes on the long, evolving finish. Well balanced - the alcohol, acidity and fine tannins are well integrated and cohesive. Smooth texture.

Opens up nicely with air, needs at least 1hr to show best but longer is better. Approachable now with a decant, but will benefit from additional time in the cellar.

  • My first Rhys. Not bad. Medium ruby, translucent, with legs. Good dusty cherry fruit in the nose. Good ripeness without being over the top; subtle and intense at the same time. Has fine structure and balance, too. Well-made Pinot Noir for sure. 5-13-17-8: 93/100.

  • 375ml bottle Double Decanted for approximately 10 hours with the cork returned to the bottle. Consumed out of a Grassl Cru at approximately 65-68 degrees in a hotel room at a 2 day conference.

This wine was underwhelming. It had a slightly muted nose of fresh flowers, red fruits and brown spice. The palate was also slightly muted with pomegranate, strawberry, red and black cherry, slightly baking spice and herbaceous notes. It was on the lighter side of medium bodied with medium(-) to light acidity.

There was nothing wrong with the wine and had all the components I look for in a good pinot noir but they just very undersrated and weren't very memorable. Maybe I over aerated. Maybe it's shutdown or in an awkward phase. Maybe I'm just not a fan of Rhys' Bearwallow pinot and prefer their Horshoe and Alpine vineyard pinots. This didn't feel like a wine that has a lot to get me excited about even if it takes another 5 years to wake up. The lack of acidity detected is what concerns me the most for this bottle to potentially blossom into something special and/or beautiful.

I have a 750 ml left. If I decide to consume it on the earlier side, I may do a straight 1 hr decant or a couple hour slow ox, incase the DD shut it down but it's probably better resting until 2027+ with the hopes there's something more exciting that comes out of the bottle with some age.

Today, my score is a 91.5

  • Pop and pour. Tasted in a Grassl Cru glass.
Nice nose of spice and red fruits. Has an herbal and woodsy note to it. Good wine just not as exciting and inviting as other Rhys pinot noirs.
