  • Scoring a Random Mini Vertical - Kenwood Jack London Cabernet - 1996, 1997, 1998 (Pueblo West, Colorado): This had awesome aromas of sweet cassis, red fruits, and a bit of mint. Some bricking at the edges as expected, but still a really nice dark red color. On the palate, this was great on P&P and really opened up after about 15 minutes. This is all dusty cassis and blue/red fruits like only aged CA cab can give you, with well integrated tannins and a nice finish. I’m sure I never would have called this as a 96 blind, but my first reaction was that it tasted very similar to a 96 Mondavi Reserve I had a couple years ago. Great wine and a vintage I’ve felt has aged really nicely with the few that I’ve had over the past 5 years.

  • I've had this 1.5 liter bottle in my cellar since I bought it from the winery. I also had a case of 750 bottle that I finished in 2010 or so. As is typical, this larger format bottle has matured over a longer time than the smaller bottles. I think we caught this one near its peak. Dark plum red color, and after an hour after decanting, the nose is rich and complex. A little cinnamon and brown sugar. A little Caramel and spice initial flavor. Very smooth and rich middle, with pronounced legs. Long and magnificent finish. Glad I waited to drink this one.

  • Jan & I are starting to go through some of our older bottles to see if they are still good. We opened this and the cork crumbled. The bottom was still moist so I pushed it all the way and decanted the bottle. It was still good but starting to go downhill. The color was still a dark ruby but was starting to show brick. There was some spice and dark berry on the nose, but the powerful bouquet was gone. There was still acidity and tannins so this was pretty enjoyable. The finish was medium length. Glad we did not wait any longer.

  • Of 11 total bought in 2000, 4th in Dec 03 was fat, spicy and fruity, reminiscent of nice '98 Barolo's that I tasted in Nov 03 in Zurich wine festival. 5th 9/05, very enjoyable still spicy and fruity; 6th Aug 07, it was excellent; 7th Jan 08 with my dad who loved the wolf bottle, so great; 8th Dec 2015, meaty, minty, spicy nose, soft, sweet fruit flavors, slightly tart finish with good acid for steak, tannins smooth but still there, good balance, acid makes finish better with food than just sipping, glad I have 3 more
