  • Easy sipping Beaujolais 2019 Georges Dubœuf Fleurie ($26). Sharp mid-ruby, viscous (14.0 alc.); red fruit, Gamay, pomegranate, light floral nose; mid acids, soft tannins; balanced; medium long semi-hot red fruit finish. Summer picnic, BBQ wine. 16-16.5 UC Davis scale 90-91 other scales.

  • Paired with swordfish, after 30m of air. Light purple color. Very floral bouquet: cherry, rose petals, baking spice, and a hint of potting soil. Bright and fairly simple, but that's not a flaw for me in an affordable Beaujolais. Silky texture, medium-light body, juicy cherries and some salinity, delicately framed by polished tannins.

  • From 75cl screwcap, served as recommended on the back label at 15C at which temperature it was sour, biting and lacking any scent at all. At 21C two hours later it had emerged as a thin Gamay with some iron filings, less biting acidity and gentle sweetness, but boy, does this dilute brew remind me why I didn‘t buy any Beaujolais for two decades until the 2009 vintage of Chateau des Jacques MdVent Roche/Rochegres/Carquelin etc. Oh dear, poor old Beaujolais - at least the continued market dominance of wines like this one (a very poor value at 13,99 GBP UK retail) helps ensure that the fine ones remain radically underpriced… 83-84P

Update after 24 hours. yes, this is as mediocre as I thought.

  • Classically styled Beaujolais cru. Refreshing aromatic red fruit. Drunk with steak and chips. Good and satisfying, one forgets what an uncomplicated and quaffable wine this can be.
