Unflattering on day one. Tried again on day five and is finally starting to open. This is good but very young and needs time. As is common with NZ Cabernet blends, it lacks some width and generosity in the mid palate but has great linearity and tannic structure.

Hawkes Bay Tasting (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Pyrazine, touch of green capsicum, black currant over slight plums, touch of sweet spice, savoury underpin. Juicy, flavours translate to the palate, quite drying flour textured tannins have a slight woody note. Hmm

Walkaround tasting. Enticing combination of ripe fruit that seems so New World, but with Old World restraint. Slightly lacking depth on finish, but certainly fun now.

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc 18m French oak
Deep ruby Attractive nose: ripe pastilles, red and blue/black, white pepper, a touch of the barnyard. Elegant and lifted. Lovely sweetness but very in-check. Super blackcurrant element.
The palate is very soft and supple with a plump core, amazing acidity – very tangy. Elegant, creamy and ripe character, and good texture. Very juicy… cassis (English), raspberry, has an ease again, soft spices and notes of tea, dried skin (apple, cherry, plum) on the finish.

Hard to get read. Very shy, almost underdone, but nearly certainly very very young. Revisit in 5.
