  • Dark without being brooding. Slight tart fruit followed by ripe dark berries , earth, nice mineralogy. Tannins smoother than silk. Paired with Iberico secreto, charred broccolini, patatas bravas. A little bit of heaven right there!

  • At Hawksmoor NYC. Against the best of Napa in a semi-blind, this was WOTN. Visually it shows its age, with a bit of a dusty, pigeon-blood look; on the palate it is velvety and rich with creme de cassis, concentrated fruits, chocolate, tobacco, all seamlessly integrated. Extended finish that goes on and on. Next to younger Realm TK and Hundred Acre Ark, this was a lot more refined and concentrated, showing the benefit of the adidtional aging. Hedonistic.

  • Good wine but from a QPR standpoint, very disappointing. It lacked the plushness/opulence we expect in a Harlan.

  • Literally stole the show after some really nice wines. So refined, lush and complex. Sweet cassis, tobacco, sage and the longest truffle finish. Pretty impressive. Only had a glass but next time with 1 bottle and some time I suspect that this will merit 99-100.

  • Brookie and I enjoyed this bottle on Valentine's Day at our favorite restaurant, JTK. I purchased this bottle in '10 and have kept it hidden away in the basement of the restaurant until this evening. After pouring into the decanter, I poured a small glass for the two of us and was immediately drawn in by the pure aromas of cassis, wet earth, blackberry, herb. The nose was beguiling and worth the price alone . . . or was it Brookie's eyes?

As the wine opened with dinner, the same notes continued, and became more pronounced. No edges or tannins in sight. Plenty of acid and structure to continue for years. This appears to be entering it's prime drinking window. Elegant, soft, plenty of muscle, but not overly ripe or extracted.

I would have scored this bottle higher, but the mid palate, although very good, lacked that extra something, completeness perhaps, that kept it from being perfect. Still, very satisfying, very youthful, with many years ahead of it. Much like Brookie.

(Harlan Estate) Inky and dense, with abundant aromas of blackberry and mocha on the nose and a savory edge. On the palate, the wine is rich, dense, and surprisingly structured, with a round texture and great length. Delicious! Winery Spotlight: Harlan Estate
