On the very lively and generous nose: ripe cherries, robust earthiness and black tea. Floral notes, mainly violets and roses, arrive after about 40 min. Palate showing sour cherries and fresh cranberries with some spices and black pepper. Medium force finish with good length that extends with a sourness and tartness. Very pleasurable aromas, but the palate is just a touch too sour and tart for my taste - better with food. *Gary Farrell, who was the winemaker for Davis Bynum at the time, and known as one of the fathers of the Russian River Valley, started his namesake brand in 1982. *Gary sold the winery in 2004, and since then it has changed hands so many times, I've lost track. *The brand currently owns no vineyards and produces all their wines with fruit from notable vineyards in the area. *Current winemaker is Theresa Heredia, who joined in 2012.

The Fifth Annual Blind Tasting of American Pinot Noir: Retail $65. Lovely ruby color in the glass with considerable earth and Bing cherry the nose. Initially quite tart on the palate with plentiful fruit which is surprisingly delicate at the same time. 92 points.

Coolest part of Russian River (although not as cool as Petaluma Gap AVA). Cranberry, vanilla, oak. Nice finish.

Light and earthy. Great cherry pie flavors. Medium acids. Drinking nice.
