The vines are ungrafted Malbec planted in 1967 in Guerrico on the banks of the Rio Negro on sandy, loamy and clay soils. Destemmed and gravity fed into concrete tanks and fermented with native yeasts. It spends 16 months in French oak of various uses. I’ve seen this wine at all sorts of prices around the globe, but I found it for around $40 in Chile.
Practically opaque in color. The nose features bright, ripe dark berry fruit with violets. A touch of herbs. The palate is juicy, medium acid which shows up more on the back end after a rush of dark berry fruit. There’s a little spice and chocolate. There’s also creaminess along with a chalky minerality and moderate tannins. Yet it feels relatively light on the palate for medium+bodied wine. A fruit driven wine like more typical Mendoza Malbec, but more potent than most while managing to stay relatively light in alcohol and weight.
