Peter's 40th Birthday celebration at Nicolas. Bright yellow, very youthful in colour. Lots of olive oil, minerals, crushed rocks, lemon and apples notes. Palate was very defined and elegant, lovely minerality and olive oil again, Chinese pear, lemon lime, grass with a hint of sweetness right at the back palate. Good wine, showing extremely young.

Burg BYO at Blu (Blu, Shangri-La, Singapore): An excellent wine. However, coming after a 1978 bottling of the same wine as this did, I thought it was rather less charming than its older sibling. Neither wine was perfect or even what you would call a great Montrachet. However, even though this grew in the glass as the other started to fade, I thought it lacked some of the warmth and generosity that was so evident on the '78. Not that I am complaining though - I thought this was a really nice wine nonetheless. It had a beautiful nose, with plenty of earthy, mushroomy undergrowth notes, a savoury, meaty undertow and a good bit of appley fruit sprinkled with little spicy aromas. Smashing, super-complex stuff. The palate was unfortunately a bit thinner on the ground than expected after that wonderful nose. There seemed to be great depth on the attack it must be said, showing in apple and lemon flavours drifting into touches of toffee-nut and smoky mineral and savoury, earthy notes on the midpalate. This had lovely complexity wed to pitch perfect balance, definition and focus - the type of marriage between breadth complexity and effortless focus that you would only expect to find only in top-notch Grand Crus. However, past the midpalate, the wine did seem rather thinner than expected and the finish was shorter than I am used to with a Montrachet, petering away with a little touch of chalk and cream. I bit of a mismatch there as the wine sort of slid downhill from its wonderful nose, promising attack and decent midpalate into a slightly disappointing finish. Thankfully, what it lacked in weight and power towards the back-end was, to some extent, made up for by the sheer class and elegance of the wine. Nevertheless, one was still left with a sense that this was an excellent, even brilliant wine, but somehow not quite the complete experience. At a pretty good place now. It certainly did improve in the glass, filling up somewhat over the half-an-hour I nursed it, but I would say it is quite ready to drink with a little air.

Not a bad wine but certainly not grand cru quality. Tasted blind, I would guess villages or maybe 1er cru.
