  • Nice wine for a pinot, oaky with a nice balance finish

  • Raspberry red with a watery rim. Floral nose, rose gardens and red fruits. Lovely velvety mouthfeel. Rich sweet fruits; sour cherries, raspberry; a hint of vanilla and spice. Sweet and long. Very fine example of NZ pinot noir.

  • Good. A bit lighter but balanced--though a bit earthy and oak on the nose and early palate.

  • I went in to the wine shop to pick up the highly rated 2004, and accidentally grabbed this one. Since I went back to get the 04, I figured it would be fun to taste back to back to compare the two. Both had very similar flavor profiles and were very CA in their styling. This one was holding quite a bit more bold blackberries and smoke as well as some forest floor earthiness. While the flavors were nice, it was a bit disjointed. Sometimes the fruit was up front, sometimes it was the smoke and earth, ad other times it was the heat from the alcohol (which at only 13%, I was shocked at how much heat I got from it). Considering the 04 and 05 are priced the same, I would recommend going for the 04, or if you can only find this one (considering the 04 got a 95 from Wine Advocate), I would give this one at least a year or two to settle down a bit. At this point, it's probably not worth the $40 price point.

  • Comparison tasting of the 2004 Rippon Pinot Noir with the 2005. Both wines are similarly styled to California central coast pinot noir but at the same time they are made in a lighter style similar to Burgundy. The 2005 seemed a little disjointed with maybe too much smoke on the nose. It does have nice acidity and good fruit but the balance is a little off with the alcohol, which is not really all that high, poking through on the finish. As with the 2004, you are reaching the top of the price charts on this one and as a result, you can do better for the price. Between the two wines, the 2004 easily outshone the 2005.
