  • #05-02, 11% abv. This has that tropical, exotic quality that I've come to expect from the Müller-Catoir wines (and perhaps especially of the Schwarz era). Brilliant freshness here with green herbs and tart tropical fruit on the palate. A little more restrained in comparison to the untamed wildness of the scheurebe, this is nonetheless a really exotic expression of riesling, and despite the halbtrocken designation, this feels like it's fully dry. And while this is an excellent bottle in fantastic shape, I'd not be inclined to age this much more, lest the remaining fruit fade.

  • Biryani night (Chicago, IL): Corked. All the more's the shame -- the palate was stunningly fresh and vibrant; this would have been a stellar bottle.

  • My last bottle of this, so sad. The nose is all lime, stone, flint, and a faint whiff of diesel. The palate has a gorgeous, juicy attack of rocks and lime. Pungent and dry, with great acidity and just enough fruit. Epic finish. A special wine. 91-92 puts.

  • The nose on this is just wonderful: thick yet racy with tropical fruits, grapefruit, lychee, mango, honey, florals, smoke. Palate isn't as good with bitter peach pit, lychee, smoke - it feels like it's dried out a bit. Finish is bitter as well with tropicals and minerals. Still some HGS magic left. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4-4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 15-16/20.

Update: day 5, from the fridge. This is still good. The nose isn't as joyful, but still shows pink grapefruit, lychee, a bit of bacon, smoke, minerals. The palate is better and is quite smooth, even creamy. Of course 15-year old Kabinett Halbtrocken is still good after 5 days ... when it's made by HGS.

(Muller-Catoir Haardter Burgergarten Riesling Kabinett Halbtrocken) Super minerally on the nose with spicecake, orange zest, orange blossoms, peach, So complex with a creamy mouthfeel and very intense acidity. Finishes dry with a long mineral/fruit finish that is played out nicely. Pefrectly balanced. Will age awhile.
