  • There's a chonk factor here, it's a burly boy... Aromas of blueberry syrup, blue plum, dark cherry, blood orange, licorice, lavender, violets, dried mushrooms, a little smoked meat and sage. Full and structured, immense inner perfume, notes of licorice, wild herbs, sweet almond, flowers.... tannins are fine but very firm, acids blaze bright, layers of tart dark sweet fruit keep everything in line. The finish bursts and coats the palate, this is quite serious. Not quite ready, I would give it another few years. This is excellent.

  • Unlike many 18’s and the Monvigliero this and Gramolere are mouth puckering astringent. Nice bright red fruit, mint and rose come through but so does a massive wall of acid. Lay this down at least 5 years. Still a good value but in need of patience.

  • Coravin. Light ruby, youthful color; aromatic, roses, floral, cedar spice, red and black cherries; palate is light bodied, high youthful tannins, high acidity, youthful red fruit, tannins really take over the midpalate, high 15% alcohol that shows slightly warm only through the midpalate; finish is medium length. Drinking better than the 2018 Monvigliero right now with a bit more aromatic and fruit character, though lacks a bit of depth for long aging. 91-92

  • 2017 Brunellos and other Italian wines: very elegant young Barolo!

slightly pale ruby-garnet in the glass with medium body. a bouquet of red roses greets the nose… and is then joined by black cherries and whiffs of cedar and dry rock. surprisingly open in the mouth at this stage; the cherry and pomegranate notes flow gently thru the palate with some spicy tones, and anchored by very polished tannins. the finish is long with a delightful procession of sweet and bitter notes and not a hint of its 14.5% alcohol level.

this seems like a Barolo one doesn't need to wait a decade to enjoy with a good decanting, and still it should go long (not exactly an eternity as others do). there is quite a bit of substance here and beautiful balance too. i came back to this at the end of the tasting… and my initial assessment was confirmed.

  • Tasted at the winery. Mid red. Immediate floral nose, spice, tingly pepper and a certain animal horsiness. But delicate. Fleshy entry but again really razor sharp acidity.
