  • Color: Medium ruby with a hint of brown when swirling. Nose: Some red fruit. Mouth: Very good expressiveness and length. Medium bodied. Mainly cherries. Some red currents, too. I like the typicity. Juicy and lean. It is getting better while breathing in the glass. Now there are medicinal/herbal aromas, too. I love it. Blows many much pricier Chianti out of the water. Bought at Lidl.

  • I thought ‘let’s put my wine snobism aside, and try this cheap Chianty Classico’ (€5,49)’
And it turned out to be uninspiring and one-dimensional. Not actually bad… but just not something I would drink for pleasure.

Medium light ruby color. Aromas of cherry and a hint of leather. Initially a bit musty, but it opened up after some time in the glass. Medium/leanbodied with chewy tannins and fresh acidity. Medium finish with a slightly spicy zing to it.

Quite generic and one-dimensional. Much less interesting than the Vino Nobile from Lidl that I had at the same time.

  • This wine is always on the rough side of rustic - sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad way. This year, unfortunately, it's rough as hell with searing acidity and little in the way of fruit. Lidl's increasingly unreliable MW winetaster Richard Bampfield scores it 92 points. Yeah, right...

  • After our last bottle, we opened this 24h early, poured a small sample (this helped to get a little air into the bottle), re-closed the bottle and set it aside. It benefitted from having plenty of time to breathe. A good, simple Chianti to enjoy with food but good on its own, too.

  • Much better after a couple of hours. There was perhaps too much Sangiovese acidity at first but the wine softened in the glass.
It was much better with food when the acidity and soft, leathery tannins were a good foil for a beef dish. The food brought out more sweetness in the red and dark (sour) cherry fruit. 3-4 Hours after opening this was really quite a decent wine for the low price with more fruit and complexity on the nose and showing fair length.
Not a great Chianti but a simple, enjoyable, good-value wine to accompany a meal.

Note. Next day, it was much more attractive. The nose was fuller, the palate was softer with more fruit but it retained spicy, savoury notes and soft, slightly dusty, tannins that accompanied roast ham very well. Definitely worth opening the day before. I have raised my assessment by a point to reflect the value and the improvement next day.
    We bought some more.
