  • I was apprehensive when opening this wine, wondering if Barolo Riserva and hot vintage was going to make a rich and warm wine that I hardly appreciate them. But Monprivato has never produced cloying wines. Here the aging lasts about 40 months in Slavonian tuns and bottling does not occur until 6 years later.

The dress is surprisingly translucent like a burgundy.

On the nose, it is bewitching: roses, undergrowth and cherries in brandy. There is already a lot of complexity.

On the palate, it is simply magnificent. The wine has a natural presence, a sort of quiet but gentle force, everything is textured, deep, integrated. It begins with an orange zest on the palate which brings freshness and liveliness before the silky juice comes to line the tongue and unfold its entire palette of aromas: it is massively floral, almost chalky, with a tangy fruit that gives a juicy side. The wine is kaleidoscopic with an undergrowth and a very fine woodiness which develops and truffles which arrives with aeration. The balance is magnificent with this fine acidity which stretches the wine without any heaviness, while the juice remains massive. A grandiose finish that starts with black tea before exploding like a peacock's tail on spices. Impressive length as minty as it is subtly peppery.

    Great Barolo.

  • A well-delineated nose of classic Barolo notes, with cherry, rose, tar, and earth all wafting from the glass in balanced intensity. There's a very nice intensity here, full bodied, nicely textured, with a long finish of cherries and rose. The 2003 Ca d'Morissio Riserva Monprivato far outperforms for the vintage.

  • Warm in '11, so warm in '03 notes Elena. The implication being that she wants to show how the current wine can age even if the vintage is hot.

Now is a good moment to uncork 2003 Monprivato Elena notes because its young but already to plateau. This is the Riserva of the Ca d'Morissio. Held in wood for 34-36 months. Riservas get an additional 20 months. And then at least one more year in bottle.

And that is an incredibly complex nose. Tar, cherry, roses, forest floor. More forest floor than tar. Cured orange zest. And the palate is very smooth and integrated.

THis is a vineyard and wine selection from, if I heard it right, this section of the vineyard specifically replanted in 1988 to make this wine. But they winery then selects when the wine has been aged for a while what to actually put in the bottle.

Elena feels the '12 is classical but gentle vintage, dry refined, elegant. She notes the press seem to want to push the '13 because its more muscular but '12 is more classical.

Lots of life and acidity for this vintage.

  • VERTICALE MASCARELLO: Etereo, prugne sotto spirito. La parte acida che si somma alla dolcezza del frutto maturo portano alla mente il passion fruit.
Poi radici amare, foglie umide e tanto the nero.
Meraviglioso

  • 2001 Bordeaux plus Rhones, Burgs and More: A little overripe and hot, but paradoxically offers delightfully pure Nebbiolo fruit.
