Disappointing. Normally Pomal is a superb value traditional Rioja producer. The 2015 vintage was good so there's no excuse for the frustrating lack of definition or muddy fruit here. There are some attractive aromatics such as late summer blackberries and cocoa and leather, but the wine overall lacks cohesion and firmness. At eight years it should be singing. Pity!

Not decanted, but left to breathe on the counter for about 30 minutes.
Nose of red fruit, oak, and perhaps dates. Fairly fruit forward. A slight touch of dryness (in comparison to other Riojas of similar vintage and style) but not enough to be overpowering or distracting.

TWS Rioja tasting (Chelsea Old Town Hall): A little reductive, slightly ferrous - but there's a sense of freshness. Some sweet red fruit on the palate, the oak is young and needs time to integrate, lots of tannins but the texture is pleasant. Built to age and has the fruit weight to carry it.

The oak is pronounced here, overt vanilla notes on the nose and the palate. Rich fruit, somewhat dry from the oak, some oxidative marks, edgy tannins. Too young and some potential here, but I hope the fruit can stand up to the oak over time.
