  • Blind: I was pretty confident this was Pinot Noir. I even said to Steve "I've had this profile in a Pinot Meunier, once, but this is Pinot Noir".

Nice wine and the strong red apple doesn't scream the Marne so I was fishing for a producer in the south. I was in the wrong pond.

  • Bookclub (served blind)--Sean (Foretti's in Corona Del Mar): Served blind alongside the 2012 Dom Perignon. In this pairing, while I lied the Dom, I found the Mousse more to what I want. December 2021 disgorgement, with the usual 100% Meunier from around Cuisles, no dosage. Shy nose this time around. Palate is zesty, with a delicious juicy texture. Some prickly yellow apple, almost veering to a candied apple yet not cloying. Overall, this bottle has a suave, seductive tone.

  • December 2021 disgorgement again. 100% Pinot Meunier, no dosage. 4th bottle in as many weeks. Headed out to dinner last night with a non-geeky couple so decided to bring this along. The husband says to me, man, this is really good. I hadn't biased him, just an authentic reaction which I thought was cool, a complement for this cuvee again. I'm polishing off the remaining glass tonight, so it's had some air and the CO2 stuck with the wine pretty well under stopper. I've still yet to replicate the smoky top note from the bottle last month, as this bottle exhibits a citrusy, pink grapefruit aroma, along with that woodsy aroma I got when we had this blind a few weeks ago. A lot of apple in this bottle, along with fresh, spicy pear, tangy peach, with the pink grapefruit. This bottle is more accessible, probably aided by the air it has seen. I still think this is a terrific value at $55, showing some character, fruit, some cool edges.

  • Champagne In My Backyard: We tasted this 2018 base, along with the 2019 base, both blind as part of a larger Champagne event I hosted yesterday. I decided to retain these two wines to retaste this morning after breakfast, as I had just enough time to revisit just these. Before I add my note for this 2018 base, it's kinda ironic that the only wine I didn't get to yesterday was the 2018--it's just listed with the bottle identified in my notes but blank with a note next to it. Of note too, this is the third bottle of the 2018 base I have had in the past month, and this bottle reminds me of the high caliber of the very first bottle 4 weeks ago. 100% Pinot Meunier from around the village, no dosage. Mineral aroma, with a concentrated and spicy core that is backed up by a lemon profile., with some peach buried alongside it, plus a touch of oxidized apple. There is a lot of concentration here, and it seems very wound up, finishing with some mineral spine. I'd offer that my note here should have good clarity, as I tasted this without food, and with just the 2019 alongside it, at room temp (68f). My hunch is that this 2018 base is gonna last a good while, fed by plenty of energy.

  • Blind Champagne at FMIII's: Underbrushy. Rich on the palate – came across as almost sickly-sweet, which I have a hard time explaining given the zero dosage. This came across as "more Pinot Meunier" than did the '19 perpetuelle, which was overall brighter than this one.
