  • Ristow's 2004 Quinta de Pedras Cabernet remains suspended in time. From a bottle that was purchased upon release and cellared under ideal conditions, it is still remarkably youthful. Opaque ruby, it continues to deliver an intense, concentrated package of dark bramble fruits, kirsch, licorice, allspice, crushed rocks and violets. Full-bodied, low-to-medium in acidity and with plentiful silky-textured tannins, it stays impressively dense on the mid-palate and throws no heat from its 14.7% alcohol. Lengthy and luscious on the back end, this 17-year-old Napa Cab is aging at a glacial pace. Sadly, this was my last bottle. Well-cellared specimens should sail through the remainder of this decade. Drink now-2030.

  • Very Bordeaux nose with horse saddle, boysenberries, and hay. Silk texture, hints of leather amongst mulberry and blueberry fruit. Intense tannins. This is a quality Napa Cabernet, but I'd say open now before the tannins overtake the fruit.

  • Second notes on this wine from two years ago. Deep dark opaque purple in color; cannot see bottom of glass. Forward, attractive & complex nose of dark black fruit aromas of cherries, cassis, brambles & plums with earthy & dusty overtones, grilled herbs, spices, mocha, licorice & mint notes, tar, minerals and a hint of vanilla. Full bodied with a very good concentration of smooth textured dark fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & cassis with herbs, mint, dark cocoa, spices, minerals and a touch of vanilla. Long lingering finish with some fine tannins & a bit of heat. Drinks quite well at present with decanting and extended airing. Although it may be close to its peak of development, it should develop further with additional aging.

  • The 2004 Ristow Quinta de Pedras Cabernet has impressed from the get-go, and this tasting suggests nothing other than that it is still actually getting better! Opaque crimson/ruby, it flaunts a very intense nose of black bramble fruits, licorice, tar and baking spices. Full-bodied, round and with substantial residual fine-grained tannins, it has amazingly pure black fruit flavors which persist throughout the middle. The alcohol (listed as 14.7%) is very tame and the finish is lengthy. One would be hard-pressed to find a wine (at any price point) which shows better purity of fruit. Those lucky enough to have this gem in the cellar will be rewarded handsomely over the next decade or more. Drink now-2024.

  • Just opened my first bottle. Second the comments of others re: dark red/purple color and loads of fruit. Nose and 'front' taste saturated with vanilla. A little too 'alcoholly' but minor complaint. This is really wonderful wine with far to go. I bought more!
