Head to Head Sancerre Tasting - Blind, Episode #781, 12/7/2009, (See more on Wine Library TV...) 85 points

(Gerard Boulay Monts Damnes Sancerre) #2; VaynerPAZZZ; COLOR-light golden; NOSE-a little melon & grass components which is intriguing, but kind of boring; PALATE-wow -- good acidity; very clean; star fruit with a little hint of kiwi on the back-end which I like quite a bit; and sour -- Sour City, USA which is exciting to me; I would not think this was from Sancerre, more New World sunshine (more of a Case Blanca Chilean Sauv Blanc); well made, but this is boring; GV-85

(BOULAY Monts Damnes) Boulay Magnum Ok, I wasn’t sure if I was going to get these in 2007 but here we go....one of my favorite wines year in and year out from a man that has a reputation like Lafon on his home turf. This set of magnums is being hand bottled for us from the best material they have, and to say Boulay hit home runs in 2007 is putting it mildly. It’s always a toss up as to which wine I prefer (this or the Clos Beaujeu) but the Monts Damnes is from the smallest “golden nugget” of soil Boulay has and it is an absolutely gorgeous masterwork of a wine in 2007 - chiseled, full of old-vine energy and the verve that most in Sancerre simply have to admit they cannot achieve because their terroir is inferior. Boulay has arguable the best land in all of Sancerre and to get a magnum of his Monts Damnes bottling is not only rare - they basically don’t exist. This large format represents one of the last great bargains left at the very highest end in European white wine. It is a true prestige bottle and it will age for a decade or more in this format (Boulay would say two decades) - it would be a great choice for a large gathering any time of the year or at a special event. A rare and impressive wine in magnum that screams for bottle age. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a sanely priced large format bottle of the highest order (if this was Meursault it would be two to three times the cost and it probably wouldn’t be as good) Due to EXTREMELY LIMITED quantities, that’s all I will say. 2007 Boulay Sancerre “Monts Damnes” 1.5lt Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Loire6890
