  • Very crumbly cork. On decanting (to get rid of the many cork fragments) the colour turned out to be a peculiar pink! Never seen that in old bottles of this before, with deep gold being a more typical colour for oxidised examples. The nose confirmed its state though: badly oxidised, and undrinkable. Luckily I had a second bottle to hand...

  • After an oxidised and undrinkable first bottle, and a crumbly, even crumby, cork in this one, it was a great relief to find this not just drinkable but very enjoyable. Almost sunflower yellow in colour. A faint whiff of petrol and citrus on the nose: lemon and lime. On the palate, mature but delightfully fresh and light. With time, flavours of lemon marmalade or maybe lemon meringue pie start to come to the fore. There's a suggestion of sweetness on the nose, but despite my reference to pie, the palate is completely dry. No doubt this wine was a ghost of its former self, but nonetheless it was fascinating and enjoyable. A win in the game of Old Wine Roulette. 12.5%, cork.
