  • A relic from the early Oak Age – back label says barrel-fermented and aged in oak afterwards. Anyway, this was tasted blind and I liked it - my #2 wine of the night. A mid-golden but very clean colour – seemed healthy. A huge amount of Clear honey on the nose, ending with a little coconut and vanilla. Some other people were primarily getting the vanilla, and didn’t like it so much for that. Some also objected to the little sherry streaks in the palate. I’m not a sherry fan myself, but I found this trait within my limits and a nice element of complexity. That oxidisation, right at the end of the wine’s life, is aiding a moderately sophisticated peak. Minor burnt caramel tones, and just a trace of Chardonnay burnt butter coming in the finish, which I did find a little short. Obviously pretty low-acid, but would be an indulgent drink. Finding another bottle to drink might be something of a problem. 90-92, 91.

  • NobleRottersSydney - Hunter Valley; 8/13/1999-8/15/1999 (Hunter Valley): {cork} Plenty of malo and butter character here, but the acidity is up to the job. Just needs a bit more fruit I reckon. Always something of a bridesmaid region, Padthaway.
