Not sure how this continues to get high ratings from others. It is good, I'll give it that, but far from great. This bottle was a little worse than the last.

It pours like mud, so it seemed. Thick and creamy, no transparency, dark brown colour in the carafe. It has been years since I drank a Giorgio Primo Chianti from La Massa, it must be back in 2003 in Rome, at the Asinocotto. In the carafe it looked almost like a suspension of a most, the colour of prunes. Then, the taste of prunes, fresh ones, fruity but not screaming, attenuated. Tannins very much alive, this wine could live another 10 years in my opinion, but it was by no means too early. Soon it opened up and there was a delicious rich chocolate after taste, a very inspiring wine. Sipped it through a meal of roasted baby veal, roasted in wine and mushrooms, with (it must be obvious) the obligatory Normandy potatoes mashed with real farm cream and chives from the garden. By the end of the meal, the wine released edges of pepper, and had opened up into a truly complex and delcious drink. A really wonderful Chianti. In error I believed it was the only one I had in the cave, but because of an oversight, I failed to notice that not only did I have 2 bottles of 1998, but also some 1991. Next time, and it will be soon, we will try the 1991, which I predict will be at the peak of its perfection.

PS Several hours later, just sipped a bit more. Convinced that with air even more would come out, we saved some for the early evening. Surprisingly, the tannins have nearly vanished and the flavours are attenuated. Open it, drink it, enjoy it. No need to wait.

Full nose. Hefty tannins dominate the palate. Needs a lot of time yet.
