  • The Finest Burgundy Domains: The Classical 2004 (Caveau): A black wine made from Tannat- a varietal that I have never heard before. This is lightly perfumed with some dark blue flowers dominated by leathery notes. You can almost smell a bull in it. Good structure and mouthfeel. Medium length. I will definitely be looking for more Tannats to drink from now on..if i can even find any at all.

  • This is the first Tannat I have ever had, and I must say that I rather enjoyed it. Drank at Aston's Prime with roast lamb and beef - great pairing. Dark purple-black colour. The nose was rather tight at first and rather stinky, with leather and barnyard smells dominating. It opened up with time to show meat and sweetish black berries and some smoky, woody scents. All very thick and dense on the nose, but the palate showed really surprising elegance with fresh, bright acidity and a tannic punch - very gripping, but not coarse or chunky. Lots of petits fruits noir, like dark berries and cherries, and a savoury meaty undercurrant. Shortish finish. Simple wine, but very pleasant, and really really good with the red meat.
