  • Very mature Madiran, providing Bordeaux style notes of fine oak, tobacco, plum and chocolate. In its final drinking stage, if not a bit past. Hurry up!

  • A: medium garnet
N: medium (+) intensity, earth, tabak, leather, dried red fruit, dried black cherry, dried black plum, smoke, mushroom, barnyard to start but blows off after 1 hour in decanter.
P: dry, high acidity, high soft tannins, medium (almost low) ABV, medium body, medium intensity flavors, long finish
C: very good wine, balanced structure and tertiary notes with some lingering fruit, complex with a decent finish. Drink now, at the end of life.

  • Poured into a decanter, but started sipping a little of it shortly after the initial cork pop. Fruit has long since faded, as expected, but the tannins have finally melted away to leave a pleasantly balanced red meat wine - frenched lamb chops with a rosemary red wine sauce in this case. As previous reviewers have noted, there's enough acidity that it also seems "fresher" than I might have expected, but there's not much complexity here. It was drinking very well with dinner, but now afterwards, with some more air, the body seems to be lightening and any slight complexities previously present are diminishing. If a friend showed up with another bottle of this, we'd certainly drink it, and even enjoy it - but it seems this one has seen it's day ....

  • Deep red with brownish reflexes. Straight out of the bottle with too much acidity and tannins. Needed 2 hrs in the decanter.
Then: leather and cigar in the nose. Herbs, menthol and still cigar on the palate. Not a smooth wine but has character. Needs flavourful food like a big steak with fat ;)
