Celery seed, some red fruit, mint and asphalt. The final gasps of life, not at all unpleasant with all the mint, tar, and caramelized orange peel, but lean and harsh through the finish. Thought this had a better chance of recovery.

Initial nose was seemingly maderized, but gave it some time in decanter. Comes back to life, but as an old dowager in her final days. Kirsch, dried leaves, "Russian tea" (Tang). Drinkable, more interesting than delicious. C+/B-

The '74 Luigi Einaudi is showing wonderfully with moist black soil, crushed fall leaves, spice orange peel, dried strawberry, and hints of cedary spice. On the palate, I found soft textures with zesty citrus-infused minerals, inner earth tones, bright dried strawberry and a hint of old wood. The finish was long with lingering notes of dried red berries, tangerine, earthy minerals, and a bitter twang of savory herbs. Maturity wise, this is currently balanced on a pin, and can easily fall off a cliff, yet today it's so beautiful.
Looking at past tasting notes, I suppose proper storage is the only explanation. This wine had a nice layer of mold on the top of the cork and low ullage, yet with a three hour slow-o, showed wonderfully.

I was so looking forward to trying a 40 year old Barolo on my 40th birthday, but this wine was definitely past it's sell-by date. The nose was reductive and reminiscent of an Oloroso or Amontillado sherry. The palette was pretty much the same; no tannin and very little fruit - mostly just acid. It really did taste like a poor quality dry sherry. Too bad.
