Cellar tasting (Cologne): Glass: Gabriel Standard *** brief notes for my memory, no official CT rating *** Popped and poured. Perfect bottle. Classic Ruwe nose. A real beauty, but it could not compete with the 1993 Abtsberg Auslese #83 we had two days before. 91-92

Bud's 70th birthday lunch - the day after (Eketahuna, New Zealand): Light gold - some sulfur - racy lemon peel nose. Light and crisp palate, medium sweetness, considerable complexity - an almost weightless wine that dances on the palate. Minerality to the fore with a bright and involving finish. First rate wine at 7.5%.

1989 revisited offline (Hambleton Hall, Rutland): A very young colour. The nose, however, belies the wine's age and shows some reduction and some sulphur. On the palate, it's a little schizophrenic: it's fresh yet at the same time has mainly secondary, minerally flavours.

Wow. A massive herbal bouquet came from the glass! And the cork was almost perfect... Anyway, back to the color. Yellow, but quite light in color actually. Surprised all of us that the wine was 20 years old. Looked more like a 10-year old wine in the glass. Ok, now back to the bouquet! Slight petrol/sulfur hints which burnt off after some time in the glass, but always present were these amazing aromas of spearmint and Thai basil and hints of "minerality"!! We all agreed that the Thai basil was there along with other herbs. Very interesting. ON the palate, this Auslese wine with 8.5% alcohol was almost completely dry after 20 years, but there was a mild sweetness on the attach which quickly gave way to a very elegant high level of acidity. Much more elegant in fact that many of the Karthaüser's I have had in the past. Oh, and of course, on the palate there were plenty of ripe lemons and a splash of kumkwat.. Very nice wine today. If you own this wine, I would enjoy it now even though I feel it still had some cellar life left.. But why wait, drink it! This wine is exactly the reason that I am in love with the Riesling!!

(Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Auslese) Bright light medium gold color; a little VA, grapefruit rind, kerosene nose; not fully mature, a little tight, grapefruit, citrus, mineral palate, with tart grapefruit acidity; medium finish
(Eitelsbacher Karthausherhofberg Auslese # 57) Intense nose of lemon curd and petrol with hints of green tea. Electric palate with a wonderful powdery texture and ripe fruit.
